New Years in San Miguel

New Years in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is becoming a tradition for me as I find it truly magical. It reminds me of a simpler time when the world was safer and more innocent and not as fast paced. Hundreds congregate just before midnight, where there is music and dancing in the Jardin.

The Parroquia, built in 1683, and the other old colonial buildings are lit, the ficus trees in the square are adorned with white lights and there are piƱatas and Christmas decorations above every street. There are Mexican families with young children, young couples, residents of Mexico City and other cities enjoying Champagne and Americans both residents and those visiting for the holidays amazed by the sights. Everyone lights one of the two foot sparklers and at the stroke of midnight and the pealing of church bells, there are fireworks overhead and a pinwheel on the Parroquia gate announcing the new year and bidding adios to the old. I look forward to this spectacle every year and hope you make it a tradition as well!
